FAQ – FOR STUDENTS
Who can participate in this program?
Basically every American exchange student who is enrolled at one of the participating universities for the summer term 2012 and/or the winter term 2012/2013 can participate. Teaching experience is not required. You are only expected to have an interest in the host country and be open for a cross cultural exchange of perspectives and views. You should enjoy talking about the everyday life, culture, history, and politics of your own country. In appreciation for your contribution you will receive a free d.a.i. membership, which includes the d.a.i. library pass – both are valid for one year. The d.a.i. membership allows you free entrance to d.a.i. events: lectures, book discussions, movie-nights etc., and you will receive reduced tickets for theater performances and concerts.
What should I talk about?
You can freely determine the focus of the topic you would like to share: you can report on your field of study, a hobby, or a specific experience. The only requirement is that you give qualified information, and enjoy getting in touch with German High School students. This also means you should be open to a German perspective on the topic under consideration. The school lesson should not only inform, but also make a dialogue possible.
Do I have to organize the school lesson all by myself?
A German teacher will consult you in regards to arranging the school visit. The structure of the lesson is open-ended. On the application form you can specify if you would like to give a short talk, lead a discussion, or be interviewed. You could also offer a workshop on composing a piece of music, arrange a dance with them, anything interactive is fine.
How many times will I attend a school visit?
You can participate in the program as often as you like. One school lesson takes 45 till a maximum of 90 minutes, so you could easily visit two classes in one day, if the teacher arranges that.
Where can I find material for the school lesson?
If you need material, check out the library at the d.a.i., which has a large choice of books, photos, movies, music, and periodicals. Our librarians are happy to help you. Also you might have a look at Info/Downloads on this website. Who can I consult with? The d.a.i. offers hours of consultation where you can pose all your questions. See contact. There will also be an introductory workshop. Topics to be covered are methods of cross cultural communication skills, the German school system, and teaching techniques.
How do I register?
Go to the registration form for students form on this page. Complete it online and send it off. We will try to find suitable teachers/classes for you, who will then contact you via e-mail.
What happens afterwards?
Please fill out a feedback form which will be given to you along with the train ticket. Upon completion of the program, participants will receive an honorary volunteer certificate.
